Postdoctoral Research Associate – Radioecology - 2-year position

The Savannah River Ecology at the University of Georgia invites applications for 2-year position as a postdoctoral research associate in radioecology, with an emphasis on collection of radiological monitoring data and development of outreach materials for the general public.

The successful applicant will be located at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in Aiken, S.C. and will report to the Director of the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.

This position will be paid at a rate of $40,000 per year with benefits and will contribute to the design, implementation and delivery of a radionuclide education, monitoring and outreach project for local communities in the Central Savannah River Area.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to take the lead in developing sampling protocols for implementation of collection of radionuclide monitoring data to be collected in selected communities in Georgia, which will be used to inform the development of outreach and education programs for these communities on the interpretation of such data and understanding the actual risks of radionuclides in the environment. This individual will be responsible for working with local community members to select locations for collection of a limited amount of monitoring data, processing of samples for analyses, analysis of samples for radionuclide and heavy metals, analysis and interpretation of data, comparison of data to results of local monitoring data from the Savannah River Site and the state of South Carolina, and translation of data for use in outreach programs. This individual will work closely with SREL outreach staff, local community members, and NGO’s to develop materials for use in public outreach programs.
 
Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD in an appropriate field (Environmental Health Physics, Radiation Health Physics, Radioecology, Radiation and Environmental Protection, or a related discipline), with demonstrated potential for research and outreach proficiency. The candidate should have a strong background in the collection of radiological data from environmental samples and the analysis and interpretation of such data. The candidate should have the ability to interact with outreach professionals, members of the general public, and NGO staff to develop outreach programing in radioecology for local communities. Preference will be given to candidates having a record of excellence in research and communications skills.
 
Savannah River Ecology Laboratory: The successful candidate will be located at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in Aiken, SC. The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory is a research unit of the University of Georgia located on the 300 mi2 Savannah River Site, a Department of Energy facility near Aiken, SC. With a staff of over 70 faculty, postdocs, research professionals, technicians, and graduate students, the laboratory pursues basic and applied research at multiple levels of ecological organization, from atoms to ecosystems. SREL also provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research training, and service to the community through environmental outreach. Throughout its 60+ year history SREL has strived to acquire and communicate knowledge that contributes to sound ecological stewardship.
