ICRER 2017 - 4th International Conference on Radioecology & Environmental Radioactivity

After the success of the previous events held in Bergen, Norway in June 2008, Hamilton, Canada in June 2011 and Barcelona, Spain in September 2014, the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) are pleased to announce that the 4th International Conference on Radioecology and Environmental Radioactivity (ICRER) will be held in Berlin, Germany, 3-8 September 2017.

The aim of the conference is to review and discuss recent achievements in radioecology and related disciplines, as well as to promote continued development in these subjects in order to improve the radiological protection of humans and the environment.

The International Conference on Radioecology and Environmental Radioactivity 2017 will cover the acquisition of basic scientific knowledge in research dedicated to any human and wildlife exposure situations for a wide range of radioactive sources and scenarios (planned, existing and emergency situations), as well as identifying new societal needs along with technical requirements for regulators and industry. This will include environmental monitoring strategies, advances in metrology as well as development of validated models to better predict the consequences of all sources of radioactivity; industrial, (enhanced) natural, accidental and potential. Advances in methods dedicated to integrated and graded approach for human and wildlife radiological risk assessment will be another operational focus of the conference. Research combining “lab-field-modelling” approach and fit-for-purpose applications will be appreciated. Presentation of major outcomes from research programmes on the environmental consequences of the Fukushima and Chernobyl accidents will be welcome. Design of appropriate emergency preparedness routines will be another focus area, as well as supporting the development of laws and regulations that protect man and ecosystems from the effects of ionising radiation. Openness to other disciplines to integrate their skills and knowledge to improve radioecology, and capitalisation of best practices, tools and data in the various fields of research is encouraged.

The conference will be a key forum for researchers, industry, regulators and experts for whom radioactivity in the environment is an interest area. It will include a selection of oral presentations, as well as short oral presentations for selected posters and poster exhibition.

Abstracts on original work must be submitted for oral or poster presentation in one of the nine proposed scientific sessions.

All abstracts must be submitted online via the Conference website and using the online submission form. Abstracts sent via fax or e-mail will NOT be accepted. Only one abstract per individual participant can be submitted whatever the presentation type (oral or poster).

Scientific sessions

Conference sessions will be comprised of selected oral presentations. Poster exhibition will be arranged for all accepted posters.

Abstracts are invited in the following sessions:
- Radiation risk at nuclear legacy sites: assessment, remediation and regulation
- NORM and TENORM with respect to long-term human and environmental protection
- Fukushima- and Chernobyl-driven evolution of post-accident environmental recovery preparedness and
management
- Evolving issues in the emerging nuclear landscape: fusion, Gen 4 reactors, SMRs, dismantling, radioactive waste management and consideration of environmental impacts.
- Application of novel methods used for monitoring and radioecological studies.
- Advances in radioecological modelling approaches to support regulation and underpinning databases.
- Dynamics and distribution of radionuclides in the environment and underlying processes.
- Mechanistic understanding of the effects induced by ionising radiation in non-human species alone or in combination with other stressors.
- Dissemination of scientific information to the public and risk communication.
