It is with deep regret that Dr. Yoichiro OMOMO, Executive Advisor, Former President of Institute for Environmental Sciences (IES), Aomori, Japan, passed away on 7th December 2023 at the age of 89. He had been leading Japanese radioecology, as director of the Department of Radioecology, National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). After leaving NIRS, he moved to Aomori to establish a new research institute, IES, which studies the environmental and human safety of radiation and radionuclides related with the Nuclear Reprocessing Plant in Rokkasho village, Aomori. He received the 3rd IUR V.I. Vernadsky Award on 2011 in recognition of his achievements in radioecology.
As well as his scientific activities, we certainly miss his wonderful personality as a leader, a colleague, and a friend. We would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to Dr. OMOMO’s family.
A funeral ceremony is conducted by the close blood relatives. A memorial meeting is expected to be held at a later date.
