Obituary: In memory of an outstanding scientist, Prof. Yasuyuki Muramatsu

Prof Yasuyuki MuramatsuOn July 2, 2016 passed away an outstanding scientist in the fields of Radioecology, Radiochemistry, Geochemistry and Analytical chemistry in Japan.

Yasuyuki Muramatsu was born on January 9, 1950.

In 1974 he received a Master of Science in Chemistry, Gakushuin University, Tokyo, Japan.
In 1977 he received his Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Geochemical Institut of Gottingen University of Göttingen University, Göttingen, Germany.
In 1978, at the invitation of Dr Yoichiro Omomo, Dr Yasuyuki Muramatsu moved back to Japan and joined the laboratory, Div. of Radioecology, NIRS (National Institut of Radiological Sciences).
For a 3 years period, 1983-1985, he joined a professional staff in the Division of Life Sciences of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Austria. For the period 2002-2004 he was Group Leader of the Environmental and Toxicological Sciences Research Group, National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Japan.
In 2004 he moved to Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, Gakushuin University as a professor and for two periods, 2006-2008 and 2011-2013, he headed the Department.

Since 2011, Prof. Yasuyuki Muramatsu played a distinguished role in organization and scientific support in different activities related to the Fukushima accident: Advisor for the local government Fukushima related to the agricultural contamination, Member, Committee for survey of radioactivity distribution (contamination map) organized by MEXT and JAEA, Coordinator, Protection of environment and human from radioactivity in Fukushima organized by Gakushuin University.

Prof. Yasuyuki Muramatsu was also an active member of IUR and other scientific societies:  Japan Society of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences, Geochemical Research Association Japan, Geochemical Society of Japan, Society for Analytical Chemistry and others.

Prof. Yasuyuki Muramatsu is the author of about 140 original papers (peer-reviewed) and about 100 proceedings, review articles, books, etc...

Prof. Yasuyuki Muramatsu has been awarded for his valuable work by prizes
1992: Award from the Minister of Science and Technology Agency
1994: Award (Miyake-award) from Geochemical Research Association Japan
2009: Award from the Society of Iodine Science Japan.

Yasuyuki Muramatsu will always be in the memory of his numerous friends, pupils and followers.
